Roseway Heights SUN Community School (RH SUN CS) is a partnership of
Portland Public Schools, Portland Parks and Recreation, and Multnomah
County. Our integrated focus is on academics, services, supports and
opportunities supporting the whole child, which includes family and
community.
Annie Turtura is the site manager for RH SUN CS, 503-916-5865,
Annie.Turtura@ci.portland.or.us.
SUN CS Program Overview
The five primary goals of the SUN CS school program are:
- Enrichment opportunities, tied to student achievement, attendance,
behavior, and other skills for healthy development and academic success - Increased family involvement in schools and asset building
- Increased community and business involvement in supporting schools,
academics, recreation and services - An improved system of collaboration among school districts, government,
community-based agencies, families, citizens, and business leaders - To improve the use of public facilities and services by locating services
in the schools
We have 2 main avenues for the site manager to support the SUN CS mission:
- Student and Family Support Services (i.e. coordinating efforts of all
school partners, including Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement, Portland
Impact, Asian Family Services, Portland Parks and Rec staff, Mult Co. family
services, Saturday Academy, AKA Science, etc) - Extended Day Enrichment Activities (i.e. after school programs in
academics and recreation)
SUN Community Schools aim to extend the school day and develop local schools
as “community centers”. We work with partners and community organizations to
include them as part of our school environment. This includes hosting
community/partner meetings in the school.
The Roseway Heights SUN CS offers programming for students at RH from
2:15-5:30pm Mon-Fri, and then opens its doors to the public from 5:30-8:30pm
Mon-Thurs for Parks and Recreation programs, including sports leagues.
Programs for RH students vary daily. We make an effort to include all grades
and ability levels in our programming. Flyers listing the after-school
programs are available in the front office, by Jeanne’s office in the Small
Gym, and on the SUN CS bulletin board in the hallway next to the Small Gym.
Registration forms are attached to these flyers. Starting Fall 2007, there
are fees for some of the activities, but scholarships are always available.
Please contact Jeanne West at anytime for more information, or to partner
with Roseway Heights.
